Chapter Seven

Shen laughed, surprised he could find anything funny when he was so worried about Edwin.

“That wasn’t meant to be funny.” Lara glared at him.

“I know.” Shen’s smile faded. “The comment was so typical of you. I’m glad not everything around me is changing.”

“We’ll always be on your side,” Janek said firmly.

“We’ll even help you get your kingdom back once we have Edwin,” Lara said.

“I can’t ask you to do that,” Shen said. “It’ll be dangerous.”

Lara pointed a finger at him, looking stern. “Don’t try and keep all the excitement to yourself.”

Shen smiled. “I’m glad you’re coming with me.”

“If we help win the kingdom back, do you think your father will make me Lady Lara?” Lara asked.

Janek chuckled. “Can you imagine Hagen’s face if he had to address you as Lady Lara?”

Shen looked at his friends, unable to resist smiling again. He had no idea what he’d do without them, which is why they had to get Edwin back. “Hagen would hate it.”

“He’ll hate calling you Prince Shenlan too,” Lara said.

Janek shook his head. “That’s only if we all come back here. Shen might want to stay with his family.”

Lara stared at Shen, as if the idea hadn’t occurred to her before Janek had spoken.

“Wherever I stay, you lot are always going to be welcome.” Shen had no idea what he’d do if they chose to return to Rimalis without him.

The sound of hoof beats on the road caught their attention and Eira joined them. “Message delivered.” She swung off the horse. “You should have seen their faces when the arrow flew into the camp. Right beside where the assassin stood. It landed in the dirt, beside his boot. I was tempted to put it in his boot, but I thought the blood might make it hard to read.”

Shen nodded, half disappointed she hadn’t shot him in the foot. “Listen carefully. We’ve got to make sure he does what I asked.” Shen outlined his plan and his friends moved into place. Shen slipped behind the tree with the arrow in it. It was time to wait.

As he sat with his back against the trunk of the tree, his fingers automatically went to the medallion hanging from the leather cord at his neck. He lightly touched the symbol on it. He was so close to finding his family. If his plan worked he’d get to meet them.

“Mark of Kings,” Shen whispered, staring at the familiar symbol. It truly was a mark of kings and he really was a prince. Even though he’d known himself as Prince Shen, there’d been many times he’d doubted it was true. Soon he’d return to his family. Maybe it wouldn’t be the reunion he’d always dreamt, but he was going home. He’d meet his father and somehow they’d rescue his mother and sister.

“I’m going home.” Shen let the medallion drop from his fingers, smiling at the sound of his whisper. “I’m going home.”

His thoughts were interrupted by the noises of travel on the road. He rolled onto his stomach and inched forward, remaining out of sight.
